| I've read almost everything that John Irving has
written. This is not his best book, nor is it his worse. The
beginning and end are quite a bit slower than the middle. You
almost wonder if he has lost his way when he starts the third section of
the book. And I was disappointed in the ending. But endings
are extremely difficult to write. All that said, I frequently found myself mesmerized, unable to put the book down. I recommend this book, though behind his best books. And I recommend it far more than I can recommend most contemporary books that I have read. This book turns in ways that you do not anticipate and yet not in absurd, contrived ways. I am sure that there is much here that I missed. Still, I would read four of his other books first. |
