| This is the first book that I have read by Chris
Bohjalian. I took it with me to Romania to read over our Christmas
vacation. I liked it enough that I ended up buying Midwives,
which he had written previously.
The premise on the back of the cover is not the same as the actual book. A daughter shoots her father at their vacation home in New Hampshire. Is it an accident? While that is what happens, that is not the premise of the book: bait and switch. There are some interesting points. The father works for a virulent, activist animal rights group. The daughter shoots him with a hunting rifle. The main characters are well written, though the "bad guys" are too two dimensional. The bad guys turn to good guys too easily. Similarly, the key scene when the father returns to work is too contrived. He tries to do everything in one day. Even with it's faults, it is worth the read. Both the writing and the story are good. And the interplay between the characters, particularly the cousins, is very interesting. |
